The Pottery Canyon property is an exceptionally unique ‘rural’ mini ranch property in La Jolla.  The large acreage nestled and almost ‘hidden’ in the back of a private ‘park like’ canyon is a rarity in dense Southern California beach towns.  The entire 7 acre site has been re-imagined and renovated. The site has a private tennis court, a large grazing pasture (currently with goats and previously a horses).  The renovations to the buildings on site included preserving, and designing around, the original ‘heart’ of the home, this was very important and sentimental to the owners.  The quirky main entryway, living room, den and original master (now a guest room) were preserved and a 3 bedroom guest house (previously a working barn on the property and now known as ‘the barn’) was completely renovated.  The additions included, a new master suite wing, a new kitchen/family room, the dining/sala space, a freestanding home office structure, and an open air pool house.  The renovations and additions to the exterior of the home seek to be mindful of and reminiscent in shape and form to the original 1940’s home and rural character of the property overall.  The original house was patterned after the wonderful meandering ranch houses designed by Cliff May during that same time period.  As was the case in Cliff May’s designs, there was a constant effort to blur indoor and outdoor living boundaries with expansive door and window openings, it is always 80 degrees and sunny in San Diego!
